<image:title>Blog - Connecting Our future to the Ocean - As a community organizer, I’ve spent my life advocating for young people. I’ve worked on issues ranging from food insecurity to education access to public safety. Over time, I’ve come to see how deeply connected those challenges are to our environment—because when nature is out of reach, so is health, opportunity, and healing.</image:title>
<image:caption>With the support of the Healthy Ocean Coalition, I recently led a Rising Ocean Justice Leaders event that brought nearly 25 students from Albany, Sylvester, Waycross—and yes, even Brunswick—to St. Simons Island for a day of learning, community, and connection.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Connecting Our future to the Ocean - For many, it was their first time standing barefoot in the sand or watching the tide roll in. But what began as a simple beach cleanup quickly became something more. The students asked questions about marine life. They shared stories about their neighborhoods. They began to understand that the health of the ocean isn’t just an environmental issue—it’s a community one.</image:title>

<image:caption>Determining whether or not the lawfully appropriated funds get disbursed is NOT the President’s job, nor is it even within the purview of the Executive Branch. It seems like the Trump Administration (and some members of the U.S. House and Senate) might need to revisit their civics class to learn the powers instilled each branch of government. Now, this isn’t to make light of an incredibly serious attempt at an attempt to grab power from Congress.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This action in any other administration would be considered “beyond the pale” but this is going to be the kind of stunt they pull to dismantle the federal government for the next four years. While we need to choose our battles, these first wave of actions deserve our public condemnation and ire. Our job at the HOC is to protect our member organizations who are committed to ocean and climate justice, defend the progress we’ve made, and push ahead at at any level of government that still has good sense. We are going to need all the support we can get. We hope you will join us in our advocacy efforts. We hope you will join us in supporting the HOC.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - back again, but also forging forward - Well, here we are. Probably feeling a sense of deja vu.</image:title>
<image:caption>The second Trump administration has begun. But this time an administration with a plan - with a capital P - Project 2025. Trump planned to win this election, unlike last time, which makes this Administration much more coherent and dangerous. So in one respect, it’s back to 2017 for our country - which implicates everything from his abhorrent racism to climate denial. It means digging trenches to fight for social and environmental issues. Digging in our heels to hold onto what we’ve built since he last left office and prepare ourselves for the rollbacks, reviews, and revocations. But it’s also imperative that we forge forward. Thinking ahead toward all the goals we had for positive, affirmative, ocean conservation policy. Are they by large achievable now? Honestly? Probably not in a cohesive nature at the federal level. BUT: Does this change our vision for the future we want to see for our kids, grandkids, or the several generations beyond? No. Does this change the need for trust and community in order to bring that future into existence? No. Does this change our work toward a future with safe, sustainable communities supported by a healthy, resilient ocean? No.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - AN APPEAL FOR THE OCEAN - As we change seasons, moving into shorter days and longer nights, we start spending more time indoors, preparing our families and homes for winter. As leader of the Healthy Ocean Coalition, I too am thinking about our home - the one we all share - planet Earth.</image:title>
<image:caption>I am thinking about how our planet - and all its inhabitants - rely on the global ocean, which covers over seventy percent of Earth. We rely on a healthy ocean for oxygen, food, climate regulation, jobs, recreation, and even joy. Whether we live among cornfields or a shoreline, we are all connected to the ocean. Our health requires its health.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Why Your Donation Matters: Enhance Education: Your contribution helps us provide free, comprehensive training to aspiring ocean advocates from purposefully under-resourced communities. Move the Movement Forward: We equip our network of advocates with the tools and knowledge to make a real difference in ocean conservation and justice in their communities. Increase Our Impact: Our graduates go on to lead community initiatives, influence policy, and drive meaningful change for the ocean and people, but often need our support to make it happen.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Centering Access, Quality, and Equity and Justice in a Beyond 30×30 Ocean Strategy - Introduction and summary</image:title>
<image:caption>Three-fourths of the planet’s lands and two-thirds of its ocean areas have already been significantly altered by human activities—and on the current trajectory, even more biodiversity is at risk of being lost. Failure to effectively protect lands and waters globally will put more than 1 million plants and animals at risk of extinction, many within decades. In 2021, the Biden administration set a national goal to “conserve, connect, and restore” at least 30 percent of U.S. lands and waters by 2030 through the Executive Order on Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad and the America the Beautiful initiative, sometimes referred to as 30×30. The administration promised to address biodiversity loss, the climate crisis, and the lack of access to natural resources with an all-of-government approach. With the recent release of its American Conservation and Stewardship Atlas, the administration details how one-third of the ocean is conserved through a combination of marine protected areas, fisheries measures that protect deep-sea corals, and the Arctic Management Area.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - COMMUNITY CENTERED CAPACITY-BUILDING - The HOAA means community.</image:title>
<image:caption>With relationship building, trainings are more effective and drive more change, both internally for the participants and externally for the field of ocean conservation and ocean justice. We want folks who come together to feel a connection among their peers, a sense of camaraderie. That is the environment we try to build before, during, and after someone participates in an HOC training. We do that through virtual meetings before a training and community-building dinners during the training.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - COMMUNITY CENTERED CAPACITY-BUILDING - The HOAA centers experience.</image:title>
<image:caption>By experience we mean we center our participants’ lived experiences, the nuances of their backgrounds. We create an overarching goal centering ocean conservation and ocean justice for the training cohort, but we help each participant weave their own personal narrative around their “why” and “how” to achieve the goal.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - COMMUNITY CENTERED CAPACITY-BUILDING - The HOAA values local partnership.</image:title>
<image:caption>Working with local experts and amplifying voices from local communities are incredibly important components of our Academies. We co-host with a local HOC organization and ensure participants can form a regional cohort.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - COMMUNITY CENTERED CAPACITY-BUILDING - The HOAA broadens ocean conservation.</image:title>
<image:caption>The HOAA’s ultimate goal is to help expand the voices of those who feel tied to the ocean and see themselves as advocates for their communities and the ocean. The ocean is the key to combatting the climate crisis and the attending crisis humanity will shortly find ourselves in should we not drastically change how we relate to nature and each other. Our hope is that the HOAA can play a role in broadening and building the ocean conservation community with every new HOAA voice.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - people’s climate week: Art & Action for Justice</image:title>
<image:caption>Our Executive Director, Sarah Winter Whelan, is helping the HOC participate in this “People’s Climate, Justice, Art, and Action by curating a set of climate justice posters in her neighborhood with her seven-year-old child. She then invited the neighborhood to come and check out the art, to help create some community around the importance of ending fossil fuel subsidies, bankrolling the climate catastrophe, and how their community can show up in this fight. So far, it has spurred conversations with several neighbors about this art and how they themselves can create a ripple effect by sharing this work.</image:caption>

<image:title>What We Do - Our Approach</image:title>
<image:caption>We believe collaboration is key to ensuring ocean conservation policies in the United States are informed by and reflective of the people, regions, and wildlife they should serve. We work to remove barriers that keep people from becoming ocean advocates by providing relevant and timely information, building capacity to speak out for the ocean, and highlighting opportunities to engage with policymakers. We lift the work and voices of our community members to those in power and make advocacy for change more effective and efficient.</image:caption>
